Post Offices across Cumbria and the Lake District have vowed to step up in the aftermath of bank branch closures across the region.

There were initial fears that the Post Office in Windermere could well be overwhelmed with banking requests following the news that the only remaining bank in the town will close this May.

NatWest confirmed the news last week that its Windermere branch would be one of 54 across the UK to close this year and will shut its doors to the public on May 1 as part of the ongoing shift to purely online banking.

This is likely to cause issues for the elderly population in the town or anyone who might not be completely computer literate.

Given that the closest banking options will be over 20 minutes away in other Cumbrian locations such as Penrith and Kirkby Lonsdale, many may turn to the Post Office located in Windermere, Ambleside or Bowness to complete their in-person banking.

The Post Office offers services which allow customers to access their personal or business bank account at thousands of Post Office branches. Anyone who wants to do their banking in-person in Windermere may consider visiting the Post Office to pay in cash and cheques, withdraw cash and check balances over the counter.

And an official Post Office spokesperson has suggested that the three stores in the area feel more than capable of stepping up when NatWest closes later this year.

A Post Office spokesperson said: "We believe that with the closure of Windermere NatWest that banking customers are likely to visit several different Post Office branches at Windemere, Bowness and Ambleside, therefore, our branches will be able to adequately cope. We are soon holding some banking awareness days in NatWest to make people and businesses aware of the banking services available at Post Offices."
