VISITORS wanting to spend a penny in a Lake District village have spotted a wee problem with public toilet signs.

The conveniences in Chapel Stile have a new sign which has caused some amusement among locals.

The sign indicating the direction of the gents and ladies’ toilets completely contradicts those at the entrance of the building.

Ben Price, owner of The Good Life Cottage Company, said: “It’s been the source of mild mirth. The locals have a good idea of where to go but for visitors it’s a lottery. I don’t know how much confusion it’s caused because, thankfully, I don’t spent that much time standing outside public toilets!”

Lakes Parish Council clerk Michael Johnson said: “It’s just the way the sign was made. To save expense we thought we’d just go with it.

“The sign is there to let people know it’s a public toilet. Around the back we have put clearer signs up.”

Michael Johnsons comment ''it is just the way it was made'' more like we couldn't be bothered to go and check which was male or female entrance and the sign will have to do. Couldn't care less attitude. No wonder the country is in the state it is in and everybody blames teenagers.

Chapel Stile is very welcoming to visitors by providing a free and clean public toilet block. Other places have shut the vital facility or put in a turnstile to squeeze 20p out of the public's pocket. There's also a shelter opposite the toilet block with a bench to sit out the latest rain storm - I know because I've sat there trying to dry my stuff. The church is open to visitors also. This sign will bring a few lame jokes but I hope the parish council know that their efforts are appreciated.

Carry on at your inconvenience! The sign could cause embarrassment and red faces all round. If the police were called to an alleged incident, which was a simple honest mistake, it might not be taken lightly. Get it changed for everybody's sake.
