A NATIONAL fast food chain has stepped up to the plate to provide staff for a popular Kendal event.

McDonalds has pledged 25 of its employees - at a cost of £1,200 - to help marshal the town’s annual Torchlight festival, which needs almost 130 volunteers to operate.

South Lakes MP Tim Farron this week hailed the chain for its ‘amazing community spirit’.

“Torchlight represents the best of Kendal – it is a wonderful community event, put on thanks to the generosity of its volunteers,” he continued.

“I want to thank McDonalds for their wonderful donation but the event still needs even more help so if you can offer your time or services please do!”

He explained the Torchlight mantra is ‘for Kendal, by Kendal’ - and more volunteers are still needed to give up their time and effort to help it.

This year the event needs route marshals, entry stewards, first aiders, judges and programme sellers, among others.

“Torchlight an important part of Kendal's festival calendar,” said Coun Chris Hogg, culture and the arts portfolio holder at South Lakeland District Council.

“I'm very grateful to McDonalds for providing so many stewards.”

Anybody who can take on one of the volunteer roles, or knows someone who can, is asked to contact the festival organisers on 07721906030 or email volunteers@kendal-torchlight-carnival.co.uk
