PLANNING permission has been granted for another new floating jetty for Windermere, opening up access and encouraging more car-free travel to the lake’s western shore.

The new development at the YMCA National Centre, Lakeside, is all part of a partnership between the GoLakes Travel programme, YMCA Lakeside and South Lakeland District Council (SLDC). The jetty has been designed to accommodate private boat users and passenger-carrying vessels, making scheduled passenger services from the new facility possible in the future.

Work on the new 37-metre structure will begin later this year, with the construction and installation being undertaken by Dutch-based marine experts Orsta Marina Limited alongside local company Jetties and Moorings. It is expected the new pontoon will be floated onto the lake and craned into position in mid-November.

In tandem, YMCA Lakeside will be working with the GoLakes Travel programme to develop a new cycle route through its land ahead of the 2015 holiday season, which links to the network of existing footpaths in the area.

The news comes hot-on-the-heels of the new Bark Barn jetty near Belle Grange opening this summer. Together both new jetties will provide access to Windermere’s western shore by boat and will offer walkers and cyclists even more choices to leave their cars at home.
