CASH raised from auctioning a calf which was born on Christmas Day last year has been donated to a cancer charity by a kind-hearted farmer.

David Clarke, who farms at Tullithwaite Farm, Underbarrow, was invited to join a family for Christmas Dinner last year.

There, he met Tom Powell, who is terminally ill suffering from lung cancer.

David had been affected by the loss of several people to cancer over the years and at the time, his employer Henry Willison, whose land he farmed, was also suffering.

During a festive day, David went to check on a cow and returned announcing that a healthy calf had been born.

He named it 'Tommy' after Mr Powell and pledged to send it to auction, giving the money raised to MacMillan Nurses.

And earlier this month, at J36 Auction Mart, Tommy sold for £730.

"It just seemed fitting," said David.
