HAND-crafted jewellery, ceramics and paintings are among the highlights of an Eden gallery's all-woman summer show.

The showcase at Red Barn Gallery at Melkinthorpe, near Penrith, runs until August 31 and sees the welcome return of Scottish painter Morag Muir. Five beautiful new works feature the characteristic rich colours and dream-like qualities of one of Scotland's most prolific painters, whose works are held in private collections around the world.

"Windows, flowers, textiles, toys and ethnic bric-a-brac share ambiguous spaces," said Morag of her work. "The finished paintings portray layers of my personal life interwoven with my surroundings and collected memorabilia."

Ceramic artist Debbie Barber creates intricately decorated, burnished vessels that are Raku-fired, in rural Leicestershire, as well as small hand-built birds. Debbie explained: "I retain my influences from my textile background. I love pattern and colour and take inspiration from the natural world – trees, plants and the birds in my garden and the surrounding countryside."

Originally from Germany, and now based in Devon, Marieke Ringel has brought her ceramic sculptures, mainly of animals looking out from box-like frames.

Red Barn has also brought a new potter, Bridget Macklin, from her Cornwall studio, where she creates strata-like surfaces from porcelain, natural clays and minerals. Bridget's pieces incorporate drawings, maps and handwritten notes to hint at significant times and places.

Meanwhile, three stars from the jewellery world will be showcasing their creations - award-winning Rachel Brown; Adele Taylor, who makes tiny objects such as silver flowers in miniature vases; and Jane Marshall, known for her leaf-print designs.

Red Barn is open daily, 10am-5pm. www.redbarngallery.co.uk
