INDEPENDENT music legends The Wedding Present will play in Kendal on a tour which follows the release of a landmark live album.

The band, who are one of the UK’s most longstanding and much-loved indie bands with eighteen UK Top 40 hit singles to their name, will play at the Brewery on December 3.

The Wedding Present made their name in part thanks to the influential support of the late BBC DJ John Peel, for whom they played numerous sessions.

In a move which echoes that of bands who released their BBC John Peel sessions through the Strange Fruit record label, the band will be releasing a series of albums of recordings from BBC 6music appearances.

The songs that will feature were all recorded on 6music DJ Marc Riley's programme; which champions new music much like Peel's show did.

Released December on Hatch Records in conjunction with 6music, ‘Marc Riley Sessions Volume 1’ consists of three memorable studio sessions from 2007, 2008 and 2010.

The gigs on this tour will see the band play tracks from this album, accompanied by visual projections.

Marc Riley said: "The release of The Wedding Present sessions done for our 6 Music programme over the years is something of an honour.

"In the great tradition of the Peel/Selwood releases on the Strange Fruit label this record proves that even without John the BBC can still be a place where great bands can continue to grow and be creative, amongst friends."

Riley and his team of producers have formed a close bond with The Wedding Present man David Gedge and his band in recent years. The product of this bond has been numerous sessions for the show, showcasing new material and returning to a few old classics along the way.

The Wedding Present, based in Leeds, rose to prominence with their debut album 'George Best'. What followed was a number of critically acclaimed albums that has seen Gedge's career continue to blossom to the current day.

Riley added: "“There were many other bands who benefitted from the ‘Peel Effect’. Too numerous to mention. But one of those was — as if you can’t see this coming — The Wedding Present. The constant support. Plays. Sessions. Encouragement. Friendship.

"John’s love of the George Best LP (which was a heroic support considering John’s affiliation to Liverpool — Manchester United’s most hated rival) was well known… and until John passed away he remained a firm fan of all things ‘Gedge’.”

The Wedding Present recently released their critically acclaimed ninth studio album ‘Going, Going…’ and are to embark on an extensive UK tour this winter.
