BAFTA winning director Michael Cumming returns to the town of his birth on Tuesday (September 19) to show his latest film and celebrate the 20th anniversary of Brass Eye.

Made from hundreds of hours of unseen material from his personal archive, Michael’s Oxide Ghosts: the Brass Eye Tapes film shares insights into the process of making the legendary TV series Brass Eye, a controversial satire on current affairs television which was first broadcast in 1997.

Michael directed both of the pilots and the series and, over a two year period, witnessed the highs and lows of Brass Eye from a very personal perspective.

Part documentary, part artwork, the film is designed solely for live screenings and is made up almost entirely of never before seen footage. Oxide Ghosts carries the blessing of Brass Eye creator Chris Morris and provides a rare glimpse of his extraordinary working practices.

For Michael, who grew up in Windermere and attended The Lakes School, adding Kendal's Brewery Arts Centre to his sell out tour was a must.

“I had to come to the Brewery," said Michael. "As a kid growing up in the Lake District, the Brewery was my cultural life-line. No internet, no other music venues - you could hardly get reception for Radio One round here then - so everything I learned about the arts, I learned from the Brewery.”

Michael has been a successful director and filmmaker since the 1990s. A graduate of the Royal College of Art Film School and recent recipient of an honorary doctorate, his back catalogue also contains such gems as Jo Brand’s improvised comedy drama Going Forward, cult classic Snuff Box, political pranks and polemics on The Mark Thomas Product and Matt Berry’s BAFTA winning sitcom, Toast Of London.

Michael will be doing a question and answer session after the film - spilling beans, shattering myths and letting a few proverbial cats out of the bag.

Oxide Ghosts: the Brass Eye Tapes starts at 8.15pm.
