THE Westmorland Youth Orchestra heads north this month to the excellent Theatre by the Lake for a Night at the Movies.

The highly talented ensemble play the Keswick venue on Saturday, November 14, performing some of the most evocative cinematic scores ever written.

Once again, inspiring musical director Roland Fudge, conducts.

He said that in the first two terms of 2015 the young players demonstrated their ability to give powerful performances of substantial classics of the orchestral repertoire, but now were concentrating on film music.

He added: "This does not, however, mean that mainstream composers are excluded; there are many examples of pre-existing music being used to great effect in movies, some of which the WYO will play, including the hauntingly beautiful Cello Concerto by Elgar (film – Hilary and Jackie), in which the soloist will be Keir McGregor, the orchestra’s principal cellist."

Clarinettist, Jack Horrocks, having left the WYO ranks to pursue his musical studies in London, will return as guest soloist in pieces by Shostakovich (The Gadfly) and Gershwin (Shall we Dance?).

In works by R Strauss (2001, A Space Odyssey) and R Wagner (Apocalypse Now) WYO will demonstrate how the majestic energy of the Romantic orchestra is suited to the big screen.

The exciting programme also includes tunes from Dances with Wolves and Lord of the Rings.

The concert starts at 7.30pm with welcome music in the bars from 6.45pm.
