IT'S a familiar predicament - you hear a track, fall in love with it, but haven't got a clue what its called. Your choices are usually limited - harass the DJ, pretend to know what he is talking about and promptly forget what he has said or try your luck in a music shop with the cringe worthy line 'It's the one that goes a bit like this'.

But Sedbergh DJ Andi Chapple is on a mission to bring fresh music to the South Lakes masses with the help of a whole heap of recent and forthcoming releases and a natty little blackboard routine.

In between mixing new promotional records, which he receives before their release date, he manages to chalk up the name of each tune along with the record label. It's a simple stroke of genius that opens up a whole new world of musical knowledge to the easily intimidated and terminally forgetful.

"A lot of the music I play I get sent to me because people want to publicise it - that's not just because I'm a DJ but also because I am a music journalist (he is reviews editor of Flux magazine). I have always tried to be as proactive as possible and I find the black board works really well because it means people don't have to come up to me and ask.

A lot of DJs have an attitude of 'don't bother me' because we have to concentrate."

The former Manchester man has honed his skills as a DJ in his home city over the last six years and, since his arrival in the Lakes, he has performed a series of nights at Kendal's Eclectic.

"It a really nice venue - I start at about six pm and carry on all the way through. That way people who have to get home for whatever reason can pop in on their way home and have a chance to relax and hear a bit of music or come out later on."

In recent nights, Andi has played music from Modern Scandinavian Jazz to Leftfield House via Hip Hop Psychedelia.

And, if you like to keep ahead of the game, its worth keeping an eye on Andi's blackboard.

"A lot of the things I am playing at the moment will be out mid to late February. People might hear it on the radio or in some clubs in cities elsewhere but it won't have been done to death."

- Eclectic now has a full programme of live music on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday featuring local DJs and groups such as The Scampateers - with music from the likes of Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones.
