Oh I forget to mention that after Hill City we set off south to Wakeene , Kansas to fuel up (all the gas stations were closed in Hill City) As we arrived in Wakeene a tornadic storm was approaching from the south. We were trying to fill up as it approached in haste one of our team starting to fill up prepayed and then had to drive away, unfortunately the nozle was still in his car. There was a bang Dave jumped out and the gas station was filled with fumes and petrol. We left quickly. We moved under the highway to see the oncoming storm and it was putting down some major bolts. As we sat Dave saw the rear flank downdraft was starting to be drawn around into the mesocyclone and we were about to be clobbered. Dave said I think we need to moving and as we pulled onto the highway going east it hit us. I can't ever remember a drive like it , in my life. Hats off to Dave. I guess 30 years chasing storms helps. We got onto the highway as 70 mph winds hit us side on, torrential rain and large hail pounded us. We could not see a thing, nothing. Dave looked at us on the GPS map to see that we were on the highway and put his foot down. 60 mph using our location on the GPS map to see where we were going. I waited for a large hail stone to fly through my window cos it was coming on my side. I was also waiting for a smash because all the GPS told us was we were on the road not if something was in front of us. if someone. Had stopped we were in trouble, fortunately every one on that highway had the same idea and we all got into clear air. Right now we are sat in Big Bend , Kansas. Shortly to set off for Nebraska. I will fill in Friday's 5 tornadoes later.
