Sir Chris Bonington's Olympic torch raises £13,500 for charity
4:44pm Thursday 15th November 2012 in News
A LEGENDARY mountaineer's hopes of raising £10,000 for charity through the auction of his Olympic torch have been exceeded.
Sir Chris Bonington’s generosity attracted a top bid of £13,500 at a Royal Geographical Society event in London.
He used the torch to carry the Olympic flame to the top of Snowdon during the build-up to London 2012, but decided to donate it to Community Action Nepal to auction off in aid of projects it runs for the country’s mountain people.
The torch was snapped up by Londoner Richard Campbell-Jackson.
Community Action Nepal was set up by Sir Chris’ friend and fellow mountaineer, Doug Scott.
