Residents asked to check salesmen's licences

POLICE in South Lakeland have asked members of the public to check door to door salesmen are legitimate after an increase in activity.

A Cumbria Police spokesman said they had received an increase in calls regarding door to door sales in the region and that all salesmen should have a 'valid pedallers certificate' issued by the chief constable of the police force from the area in which they live. Hawkers certificates are not valid.

If anyone is concerned, they can contact the constabulary on 101

Or you could just do what I do and shut the door on them.

I phoned the police number re the guys showing Hawker cards claiming it was some sort of probation service scheme. Advisor on the 101 number said it was legit, yet I read stuff online which said it wasn't.

Yes you can shut the door but when a young male, who looks pretty roughish is at your door asking to come in so you can help him, and your house is in secluded location it can be a little concerning. Obviously I did shut the door but that's not my point. Point is the advice on the 101 line didn't appear to be accurate and they wouldn't record it as a complaint.

Are the Police or is the WG's reporter guilty of failing to spell the word pedlar correctly?

'valid pedallers certificate'

Serious issue though and it beholds all of us to keep an eye on vulnerable neighbours when these door to door merchants are operating.

A couple of days go I asked one such operator for his certificate and he showed me one issued in Blackpool. Assuming he was the named person on it I didn't take it any further as it seemed to be churlish to report a man who had taken the trouble to get a certificate albeit out of this area.
