POLICE are appealing for information from potential witnesses, as they investigate a sexual assault in Barrow.

Officers believe three people may have been in the area at the time of the offence and could hold important information about the attack.

The incident occurred between 10pm and 10.30pm, close to the top of the subway stairs opposite the main Post Office on Abbey Road, on Sunday, January 6.

Fortunately the victim, a 16-year-old girl, has not sustained any serious physical injuries. However she has been left distressed and is being supported by her family.

Now police are urging any witnesses to come forward.

One is a male described as being in his 50s or 60s, while two other males, described as being about 16-years-old are also sought. They were seen in the vicinity of Abbey Road at around the same time.

A 16-year-old male, who was arrested and interviewed by police, has been released on bail to return to Barrow Police Station on February 21.

Anybody with information that could help police with the enquiry is asked to call DC Sally Martin on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
