Eden's intrepid Helen to tackle Magnificent Seven for Comic Relief

First published in News

SHE has rowed the Amazon, trekked to the South Pole and even tightrope walked high above Battersea Power Station.

And now Cumbrian celebrity Helen Skelton is aiming to complete the Magnificent Seven for Comic Relief.

Helen, from Kirkby Thore, is taking on seven challenges - the first of which was during the half-time break at the Six Nations England v Scotland match at Twickenham, where she had to kick a conversion.

But as Helen wrote on her Comic Relief online diary: “Shock, horror – I failed the first one. I had to kick a conversion in front of over 80,000 rugby fans and, although I was gutted my kick went wide I was happy that I got it high enough and long enough. It looked decent enough, but just missed!”

Her next task is a theatre challenge, where she will be taking part in two West End theatre shows in one night.

But she is keeping tight-lipped about the remaining ones which include a creative challenge – featuring a camera and lots of red balls, the flying challenge – involving red planes, the physical challenge – with a rope-bridge, and the super-sized challenge, which may involve a world record.

Then last up is the Final Challenge and Helen is keeping this one very quiet, but promises it will involve ‘a lot of cash’.

Red Nose Day organisers are hoping the charity appeal will remain ‘recession proof’ as it marks its 25th anniversary. Celebrations saw celebrity presenters and fundraisers – including Helen – gather for a photoshoot The Red Nose Day appeals have raised some £800 million since launching on February 5, 1988.

Organisers believe the British public has become more empathetic despite the recession after Comic Relief raised a record total two years ago.

This year’s Red Nose Day takes place on Friday, March 15.
