Update: Police name Penrith passenger killed when car collided with tree

POLICE have named a Penrith teenager who died in a road collision last night.

Robin Hewitt, 19, of Milner Mount, was a back seat passenger in a car that hit a tree just before entering Eamont Bridge on the B5320.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash involving a silver BMW, which happened around 11.25pm.

A spokesman Mr Hewitt's family had been informed and were being supported by specially trained officers.

The driver, a 23-year-old man from Penrith, and a second passenger, a 20-year-old man also from Penrith, were taken to Carlisle Infirmary for treatment.

The driver has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and will be interviewed by police when he is discharged from hospital.

Police are not looking for anyone else or any other vehicle in connection with the collision at this time.

The road was closed overnight for an investigation and reopened this morning.

Officers are keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the collision, has any information that can help police or who may have seen the BMW being driven just before the collision took place.
