A TEENAGER had to be cut free from his car by firefighters after being involved in a collision on the A590 early this morning.

Police were called at 5.16am following a road traffic collision between a Vauxhall Corsa and a HGV at Lindal-in-Furness, near Ulverston.

The driver of the car, a 19-year-old from Barrow, was airlifted to Royal Preston Hospital suffering with life threatening injuries, police said.

A North West Ambulance Service spokesman said he suffered a fractured leg and lacerations to his arm and hand. His feet were also trapped in the foot well.

The driver of the HGV, a 39-year-old man from Waberthwaite, suffered no injuries.

The road, between Dalton and Ulverston, was closed in both directions and will remain closed until at least 12pm.

Police have advised motorists to avoid the area and road diversions have been put in place.

Light traffic can use A5087 between Barrow and Ulverston. HGV's should park up and wait or use A595 and A5092.
