AMBLESIDE property owners are being urged to turn their property into student accommodation under a new scheme launched by the University of Cumbria.

‘Headlease’ gives landlords an opportunity to lease property to the university to be sub-let to groups of students.

The move comes in response to the increasing demand for accom-modation in the town as campus redevelopment means that some 400 students will be based in the town next September.

The scheme is being implemented to find accommodation for returning students as first year students will be housed in university halls.

The university says it will manage lettings on behalf of the landlord and ensure regular checks at the property as well as guaranteeing to pay rent for the term of the lease.

University spokesman Lucy Roberts said: “Due to demand, our university for first year students in Ambleside will be at capacity. We would really like landlords who have availability for students to come forward and let us know.”
