A HUMOROUS re-telling of the first Christmas story will hit the streets of Kendal for one day during the festive season.

A modern version of the ancient Kendal Shepherds’ Play will be presented by Kendal Community Theatre on December 14 at town centre locations.

The ten-minute performance will be accompanied by music from Lakeland Voices and the Kendal Concert Band’s ‘Trombonistas’.

The origins of the play are uncertain although it has similarities with 15th century mystery plays, and may have been performed in the part of the town later called Doodleshire.

Director Chris Taylor said: “Shoppers should enjoy taking a short break to see our light-hearted presentation – the play is almost a pantomime and audience participation will be actively encouraged.”

The Kendal Shepherds’ Play will be performed at K Village at 11.45am and 12.15pm, the Birdcage at 1.15pm and 1.45 pm; and the Westmorland Shopping Centre at 2.30pm and 3pm.
