SOUTH Lakeland MP Tim Farron is supporting a campaign to promote local bookshops.

Books Are My Bag launched in September and aims to raise awareness of and engagement with local book retailers.

The collaboration between publishers, sellers and authors is the biggest ever promotion of bookshops and will run until Christmas 2013.

Mr Farron said: "I am delighted to support the Books are my Bag campaign. Bookshops are an integral part of a thriving and independent high street. If we lose them, we also lose something valuable from our high streets, forever.

"I hope this campaign will help to prevent further closures of bookshops across the country and I encourage everyone to support their local bookshop. Books are, after all, a perfect gift for Christmas."

Nearly 90 per cent of British book buyers were concerned about the decrease in the number of books for sale on the high street, research showed.
