A SUMMIT involving dozens of Cumbrian organisations has met to look at some of the issues the county’s ageing population will present in the future.
Figures show that by 2035, a third of Cumbrians will be over 60 years, compared to a quarter across England.
The Cumbria Partnership Forum — a group of local authorities, NHS, third sector and other organisations from across the county — used its second annual summit in Carlisle to focus on the issue of age.
As well as looking at the challenges presented by Cumbria’s older populations, the summit also attempted to dispel some of the misconceptions about age.
Figures, for example, show that 73 per cent of people are living independently at the age of 97 and third of people who reach the age of 100 are still independent.
The summit heard from speakers from Age UK, the Cumbria Community Foundation and others. Presentations on the day were filmed and will be made available through the county council’s YouTube channel over the coming weeks.
