A 23-year-old Barrow motorcyclist has died after a collision with a police van last night.

Scott Daniel Gibson, 23, was declared dead at the scene following the incident on the A590.

In a statement released by police, officers said the collision happened between Melton and Lindal-in-Furness, a stretch of road beyond the Dalton bypass roundabout but before the village of Lindal.

Police said the collision occurred at 10.30pm and involved a marked police van.

Mr Gibson was treated at the roadside by police officers and ambulance staff, however he tragically died at the scene, said police.

A family liaison officer has been appointed to the family.

The police officer who was driving the police vehicle was also taken to Furness General Hospital suffering from shock.

Officers from Cumbria Police's Collision Investigation Unit attended the scene, and the statement said they are now  'investigating the full circumstances surrounding this tragic collision'.

As a matter of routine, the incident has been referred to the Constabulary’s Professional Standard Department and also the IPCC (Independent Police Complaints Commission).

Officers have appealed for any witnesses who may have seen anything prior to the collision to contact Cumbria Police on 101 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
