'Unprofessional, misleading, dishonest' South Lakes dentist is struck off, committee finds

A SOUTH Lakeland dentist has been struck off by the General Dental Council (GDC) after a committee heard he was ‘unprofessional, misleading and dishonest’.

Frank Michael Booth, who worked at practices in Grange-over-Sands, Ambleside and Garstang, was found to have failed in his duty to provide ‘an adequate standard of care’ over an eight year period between 2003 and 2011.

The charges he faced included failure to take necessary radiographs, provide a written and detailed treatment plan or offer appropriate refunds or adjustments for treatments.

The charges, according to the hearing, were ‘unprofessional and financially motivated’ against a patient named only as ‘A’.

"The committee takes a serious view of the totality of the findings against you,” he was told during the hearing.

“This includes your failure to provide an adequate standard of care over a period of some eight years and your repeated breaches of GDC standards.

“You provided no satisfactory explanation as to why you failed in so many aspects of care.

“During that time you charged Patient A high fees for treatment, some of which were incomplete or failed.

“You did not accept responsibility, or offer appropriate refunds or adjustments for treatment such as root canals, replacement of a crown or two failed implants.

“Your conduct towards Patient A in this regard was both unprofessional and financially motivated.

“In the course of a period of eight years you exploited your professional relationship with Patient A and put your own financial interests before her clinical and financial interests."

Mr Booth, of New Barns Road, Arnside, was first registered with the GDC in 1973. The charges against him relate to a period when he worked at The Grange Dental in Grange, Total Dental Care in Ambleside and The Walkers Court Dental Practice in Garstang.

The hearing began on May 12 and concluded on Wednesday of last week.

Unless Mr Booth, who was immediately suspended, exercises his right of appeal, his name will be struck off the register in approximately 28 days.
