DRIVERS in Ulverston are being warned about a temporary road closure.

Morecambe Road will be closed for five days from Monday August 4 until Friday August 8.

United Utilities engineers need to install a manhole, chamber and pipework several metres deep as part of a project to expand the capacity of the town’s sewers.

Project co-ordinator Ronnie Smith said everything possible was being done to minimise the disruption to local people.

“That’s why we’re trying to get this section of work done in the school holidays, because there will be less traffic on the roads,” he said.

“Eventually, this new chamber will be the link between Ulverston’s existing sewer network and a big new storage tank we’re building at Ellers allotments. It’s all part of our multi-million pound investment plan to improve river, shellfish and bathing waters across Cumbria.

"We take our environmental responsibilities very seriously. When it's switched on just before Christmas, the 15 metre-deep tank will help prevent dirty storm water getting into Town Beck when it rains heavily,” said Ronnie.

Either end of Morecambe Road will remain open for access but there will be no through route. A diversion avoiding the low railway bridge on Hill Fall will be in place for HGVs. This will take vehicles along Well Lane, Park Drive, Victoria Road and County Road.

United Utilities’ sewer work is not linked to the flood risk management project being proposed for Ulverston by the Environment Agency, and is not designed to reduce flooding. However it will reduce the amount of water getting into Town Beck from the sewers during heavy rain.
