“Everyone struggled through it together and it was a good feeling at the end, and there were a lot of people waiting.

“I was a bit emotional - every emotion went through me and I was just so happy we had finished, and then of course I was thinking about why we were all doing it.”

The team of riders set off from Whitby early on Friday morning and arrived in Walney at 6pm on Saturday after a night time stop-over in Kirkby Stephen - 100 miles in.

Starting out with a target of £30,000, the cyclists have raised a staggering £24,000 for the Nicola and Charlotte Fund which will go towards buying specialist equipment for the Royal Preston Hospital and Furness General Hospital.

Mr Wood said he wanted to buy a work station worth £10,000 for the special care unit at Preston where his daughter Charlotte was cared for, plus a piece of transport equipment for Barrow.

With another £6,000 to go until reaching target , Mr Wood aims to edge closer with the help of a few supermarket bag packs and a fashion show in the pipeline.

“I can’t believe how generous everybody has been so far and we’ll get there,” he said.

But Mr Wood, who runs Turton and Wood Electrical Contractors, added there we no more plans to put foot to peddle.

He continued: “I hope I never see my bike again and I definitely have no plans to go out in the near future!”
