THE first Ofsted inspection of Kirkbie Kendal School since its conversion to an academy three years ago has rated it as good with outstanding features.

The education watchdog conducted a two-day visit in late September and released its findings for the 868-pupil school and sixth form this week.

Four inspectors observed lessons, scrutinised work, talked to students, met staff and analysed data using the new more rigorous framework that only came into operation last month.

Leadership and management, quality of teaching and achievement of pupils all attracted 'good' gradings while its sixth form and behaviour and safety of pupils was rated 'outstanding'.

“I am delighted that the excellent work of all staff and students is recognised in the report," said head teacher Phil Hyman.

"I am particularly pleased with the outstanding judgements for the students’ behaviour and for their safety, as well as the outstanding promotion of students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

"The new Ofsted framework continues to set the bar higher each year. Both outstanding and good judgements have become increasingly hard to achieve when compared with a few years ago. Therefore achieving overall good with many outstanding features shows the school continuing to develop for the benefit of the students."

The inspectors, led by Jean Olsson-Law, noted students are inspired by teachers’ excellent subject knowledge and enjoy researching into subjects. It said sixth form students 'make an outstanding contribution to the life of the school' and 'are a positive role model for younger students'.

Nicola Crierie, Chair of Governors, added: “Our examination results are recognised through league tables and the outstanding sixth form. It is really pleasing that very important areas that are not reported in league tables have also been recognised by the inspectors. The school values of care, courtesy, and consideration with an emphasis on producing confident well-rounded young women and men shine through in the report."

Naomi Brown, Vice Chair of Governors, said: "As a governor I am delighted that the inspection team recognised the good work of the governing body. It is very encouraging to know that our own self evaluation of the school is accurate."
