AN INDEPENDENT assessor feeding back to Arts Council England has given a glowing report to an arts network which operates in Cumbria.
Highlights, a network of 90 volunteer groups which organise over 160 high-quality professional events in rural village halls, schools and community centres, has been praised after the inspector attended a performance in Eden.
Arts Council England is one of the funders the scheme and had asked for a report from assessor, Kevin Dyer.
Mr Dyer concluded the performance of Bane, at the Askham and Helton Community Centre, near Penrith, was one of the best nights out at the theatre he has had.
“Real congratulations need to go to Highlights and the local organisers and volunteers for making such a highly successful event,” he said.
The report also acknowledged another strength of rural touring – the intimate and friendly environment in which audiences can enjoy not just the show, but a coming together for a good social night out.
"This was one of the best theatrical events I have been to in that the audience had such an amazing time out," he added.
"They loved being entertained; they loved being in this place at this time.
"And for me it was one of the best nights out at the theatre I have had."
