APPLEBY has been granted planning powers by Eden District Council.

Following six weeks of consultation, the authority has approved the parish as a Neighbourhood Area, making it the 27th in the district to grasp the opportunity of having a more hands on role in the planning of their local area.

This formal designation gives the Town Council the ability to carry out its own development planning with the support of the local community.

They can produce a Neighbourhood Plan that determines how development will be allowed to take place in the area, and they can grant planning permission through Neighbourhood Development Orders.

Councillor Malcolm Smith, of EDC's Planning and Economy Portfolio, said: “Local people in Eden are continuing to embrace the opportunity Neighbourhood Planning gives them.

“The strength of interest in Eden shows how important maintaining or enhancing the quality of our environment is to local people."
