PEOPLE living near an accident blackspot road are calling for it to be made into a dual carriageway.

The Highways Agency is reviewing the safety of the A66 between Appleby and Brough after figures showed there have been 31 accidents causing injuries to 42 people in the last five years.

In total, 11 people suffered serious injuries and 31 suffered minor injuries between 2009 and 2013.

Local people attended a meeting at Brough Memorial Hall last Thursday (13 November) to discuss their concerns about the road with staff from the Highways Agency and its contractor EM Highways.

Eden district councillor for Brough, Cllr Malcolm Smith, said the single carriageway road could not deal with the volume of traffic using it.

“There have been some really bad accidents so that’s certainly a concern,” he said.

“Most people who use the A66 regularly realise it is a difficult and nasty road. It has a terrible reputation and everybody is pushing to make it safer.”

Jonathan Reade, project manager at the Highways Agency, said it would use the feedback from the meeting as part of its study into safety on the A66.
