CUMBRIA is taking part in the UK Youth Parliament elections for the first time and more schools are being encouraged to get part.

UK Youth Parliament is a national forum of young people from across the UK running national campaigns to improve the lives of young people, with the support of the government and opposition parties. Nearly 40 young children across the county are running the elections for the three MYP (member of youth parliament) seats and three deputy MYP posts.

The elections will be held through an online ballot from December 8 to 12, and the results will be announced on December 13 at an event at County Hall in Kendal. Each student, at a registered school will be issued with a voting code card to enable them to cast their vote online.

Cumbria County Council will also be operating a ‘democracy award scheme’ and the school with the most votes will receive a prize. To register, schools need to contact Susan Hodkin on 01900 706375 or susan.hodkin@cumbria.gov.uk
