SOUTH Cumbrian youngsters shaping up to be the next generation in farming have celebrated another great year.

Cumbria YFC’s southern district held its 33rd annual meeting at the Castle Green Hotel, in Kendal, on Friday.

President Carol Barker outlined highlights of her year in office, including judging the Junior Public Speaking competition and frying 150 eggs at the Eden Valley Big Breakfast fund raiser.

Kerry Procter, the Southern District Chair, gave her annual report outlining a busy competition year with many clubs competing at both Northern Area and National Finals.

She said the annual Field Day hosted by Lowick YFC had been a huge success, with the host club also carrying off the Cock of the North Trophy.

Kerry also commented on the ‘excellent’ performances in the entertainments competition, particularly from Eden Valley, who had entered the competition for the first time in a number of years and the eventual district winners, Crook.

Six Young Farmers from around the county were interviewed by CFYFC President John Geldard and retired district presidents, Brian Wilson and Carol Barker, for the honour of being named Cumbria’s Young Farmer of the Year.

Helen Graham from Skelton YFC was placed first with Julie Denby from Longtown YFC a close second - Mark Hurst from Aspatria was third and Lauren Paisley was fourth.

Officers elected for the next year were: District President -Jonathan Mason; District Chairman - Lucy Mason; Treasurer - Stephen Rowlinson; Vice President - Maureen Boyren; Vice Chairman - Tracy Hodgson.

Award winners on the night were: The Winter Competitions Trophy, Kent Estuary; The Barter Shield for Public Speaking , Kent Estuary and Crook; The Harper Trophy for crafts, Grayrigg; The Andrew Wilson Trophy for the member contributing most to the club’s development was awarded to Phil Mulcaster, Lowick YFC.

The Allan Wilson trophy for the most improved club was awarded to Lowick and the NFU Cup for Young Farmer of the Year was received by Richard Carruthers of Crook YFC.

The ROC award for “outstanding contribution by an out of age member” in recognition of help and support was jointly awarded to Janice and John Longmire.
