POLICE have identified a man killed in a road traffic collision on A66 at Sandford as 38-year-old Alan Hill, from Kirkby Stephen.

Mr Hill's family have paid tribute to him, syaing, “It is with our deepest sadness that Alan has been so tragically and suddenly taken from us. 

"Alan, a self-employed brick layer from the Appleby area, will be sorely missed by his family and friends from the local area. 

"Alan was a devoted father, brother and son, he played rugby at Appleby Grammar School and also for Kirkby Stephen.”

The collision occurred on the A66 Sandford, near to Appleby in Westmorland, at 6:45pm on Saturday.

A silver Vauxhall Combo Van which was travelling along the A66 towards Brough collided with a white Renault Master Minibus travelling in the opposite direction.

Mr Hill was the driver of the Vauxhall Van and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the minibus, a 39-year-old male from the Troon area of Scotland, was taken by ambulance to the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, with serious injuries.

The passenger, a 40-year-old female from the Kilnmalcolm area, was taken by a Sea King helicopter to the James Cook Hospital, Middlesborough, with serious injuries.

Police are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or may have seen the vehicles prior to the collision to contact PC Nick Dumphreys from the Operational Support Unit on Tel No 101.
