IF YOU have a fascination with the Arnside area and have a penchant for nostalgia, this reproduction of an Edwardian book could be right up your street.

The book tells a topographical story through the eyes of the author J. Anthony Barnes, of Levens, who describes his work as 'a private pannikin into the many interests of Arnside and the neighbourhood'.

The eclectic subjects range from the quicksands of Morecambe Bay, 'a cave exploring episode' and a gipsy encampment to places of worship, the Beetham Fairy Steps and 'pirates'.

All Around Arnside was originally published as in 1903 by Titus Wilson of Highgate in Kendal, an old 'tattered and torn' copy of which found its way into the hands of local man Melville Thomson. He was so taken with the paperback. he decided to explore the possibility of having it reproduced for others to enjoy.

The new version of All Around Arnside also includes a selection of fascinating postcards of the area, taken around the time the original book was published. The updated book was funded and published by The Barnes Charitable Trust and is available from Bullough's Londis or The Little Shop, both of which are on Arnside Promenade.
