A VILLAGE brass band is seeking a wealthy benefactor.

The players of Burneside Brass have planning permission for new rehearsal rooms but they need to raise at least £50,000 more before they can start building work.

Cornet player Stuart Bell said that Burneside Cricket Club had been 'wonderful' to the band by offering a venue for weekly practice evenings.

However, a dedicated band room is 'absolutely vital', he told the Gazette, to avoid having to set up and tidy away after each rehearsal.

It would also enable Burneside Brass's sheet music library to be stored in one place, rather than scattered between players' garages and spare bedrooms.

"The aim is to extend the cricket club and build our own rehearsal facilities, but we need a rich benefactor," said Stuart, an engineer at James Cropper. "We've got a lot of grants and a lot of support. We just need a final push, really."

The band is also seeking percussionists to join its players.
