GARAGES in Kirkby-in-Furness and Hawes will be able to register for 5p per litre fuel cuts from April 1.

The Rural Fuel Rebate has been approved by the European Union following a year-long process spearheaded by Danny Alexander, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury.

It is the first time ever that the EU has approved a fuel discount on the mainland, as the UK’s most rural islands already receive this discount.

The scheme will allow 125,000 people living in 17 selected areas, who currently face some of the highest fuel prices in the country despite depending on cars for transport, to benefit from cheaper fuel.

The scheme is due to come into force on May 31.
