A TEAM of Ulverston engineering apprentices has produced a gold-winning model of a Spitfire aircraft.

They took two weeks to build their version of the iconic World War II aircraft for the Gen2 challenge held at the Energus centre in Lillyhall, West Cumbria.

The team - Will Morris, Max Dent, Sam Wilson, Jordan Capstick and Harry Rose - shone in the ‘landmark fabrication' section, which saw the apprentices put their engineering skills to the test in an attempt to recreate model replicas of iconic British landmarks.

The model, made with steel, is four and a half feet tall and has a fully functional propeller.

The Furness apprentices were presented with certificates and £25 gift vouchers by guests Sir Tony Cunnigham and Cllr Sue Hayman.

Gen2 fabrication trainer Pete Graham said: “I was so proud of their work, these lads are great example of the talent we have here at Gen2.

"To create something of this quality in such a short space of time is really something to be admired. The challenge was the perfect platform for the boys to showcase their engineering skills as well as their fantastic work ethic.”
