EDEN county councillors have agreed to consult on proposed changes to highways rules to improve road safety during Appleby New Fair.
The proposed changes follow suggestions from the multi-agency group set up to co-ordinate the local response to the fair, residents’ suggestions and ongoing review work by the council’s highways team.
They include:
* Temporary one-way restrictions on Appleby’s Roman Road
* No waiting on the Coupland to Hilton road
* Ban on vehicles, except for access, at Castle Bank and Mill Hill
* No waiting restrictions in Appleby
* Restrictions on pedestrian use of the roads and verges on Long Marton Road
* Restrictions around the T-junction at Whiteacres (Long Marton to Milburn road junction with road to Kirkby Thore)

Cllr Martin Stephenson, Chair of Eden Local Committee, said: “Appleby New Fair is a huge event that brings in people from across the country, we all know that the pressure on local roads can be significant and this can have knock-on implications for the safety of road users and local communities.
“We’ve listened carefully to our partners and to local residents and I think these changes make sense and will alleviate some of the worst ‘hot spots’ that appear during the Fair.
“This is all about making sure Appleby New Fair is a safe and positive experience both for the thousands of visitors and the local people who live here all year round.”
