A COLLECTION of fishing tackle previously owned by children’s author Arthur Ransome is to be sold at a Cumbrian sporting sale later this month.

The collection includes a variety of period fishing rods by renowned maker Hardy and a stained pine rod box with the monogram 'A R' on the lid.

Items also include envelopes addressed to Arthur Ransome containing fly tying materials, a map of Windermere, two period Hardy catalogues and a wicker fishing creel.

The collection, which is being auction at Mitchells spring sporting sale in Cockermouth on April 18, was originally bought from a sale of items from Ransome’s Rusland home at Hill Top near Coniston and Windermere following his death in 1967.

Ransome was an author and journalist and is regarded as one of the best English writers of children’s books.

As a boy, he spent family holidays at Nibthwaite, returning to settle in the Lake District later in his life.

He is best known for writing the Swallows and Amazons series of children's books about the school-holiday adventures of children, many in the Lake District.
