THREE friends who are planning an epic 10,000-mile charity car rally have been boosted by a cash windfall from a Kendal residents' association.

James Nowell, Paul Thomas and Alex Ramsay, all from Kendal, aim to raise £10,000 by completing the gruelling Mongol Rally this summer.

The total is now £140 nearer thanks to fundraising by the Rinkfield, Levens Close and Burland Grove Association.

"It is three young guys doing something unusual for charity," said Gary Tomlinson, the association's chairman. "You do not see that too often so we wanted to help out."

Most of the cash will be donated to the Multiple Sclerosis Society with a donation also going to the international environmental charity Cool Earth.

The trio, supported by family and friends, raised a further £705 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society by bag-packing for customers at Asda in Kendal on Easter Monday.
