A 94-year-old war veteran received a top military honour 70 years after his heroic actions.

Jack Ainscow, who lives in Ambleside, was awarded the Ushakov Medal in recognition of his service in the Second World War's Arctic convoys.

Thousands of allied seamen lost their lives making the dangerous journey across freezing waters to deliver life-saving supplies to Russian ports.

The Medal of Ushakov, named after Russia's equivolent of Nelson, was created on March 3, 1944, but the British government prevented them from being handed out.

Finally, after 70 years of waiting, Mr Ainscow was handed his medal by Liberal Democrat political candidate Tim Farron at the Langdale Chase Hotel.

Upon receiving the medal, Mr Ainscow said: "I hope that we never have to go to war again. There are no winners in wars and it doesn't really settle anything.

"To my mind we have too readily made war and the outcome hasn't been satisfactory. For goodness sake let's talk instead of war."
