Life is for Living by David Birkett, £10

IN THIS warm, generous-spirited biography David Birkett reveals stories about his life and leisure in retirement and mixes it all with a fair bit of homespun philosophy.

The book is a sequel to A Dream Come True, published in 2002, which told of his 32 years as Lake District national park ranger.

In Life is for Living, David reveals how his retirement got off to a momentous start when he and his wife Val were nominated as Mayor and Mayoress of Kendal and the couple embarked on a trip of a lifetime across the USA, which he recounts in the chapter American Trilogy.

The book also tells of his many hiking jaunts, both at home and in Europe, and reveals his other wide ranging interests, which include genealogy and volunteering.

In a foreword, his former national park colleague John Toothill remarks: "This book shows us how David has lived, with dedication and enjoyment. There is a great deal to admire and to learn here."
