A POP up reading corner was created in an Eden train station to mark World Book Night.

Rail users at Appleby were able to enjoy a quiet and comfortable read before boarding their train this week as a special snug was designated for reading.

Commuters could sit back and relax in a space that included a high back chair, traditional rug, Tiffany lamp and coffee table.

Alex Hynes, managing director of Northern Railway, who ran the event, said: “We know that thousands of our customers use their time on board our trains to catch up on a good book and for the past several years we have partnered with World Book Night with volunteers handing out books at stations and on our trains across the network.

"This year we wanted to bring something a little bit different to catch customers’ attention and encourage them to read and our pop up reading corner has done just that.”

The organisation even left behind free bookmarks and copies of highly rated books on the World Book Night list, including Water for Elephants by Sarah Gruen, Dan Man Talking by Roddy Doyle and When God was a Rabbit by Sarah Winman.

Held this year on Thursday, April 23, the annual World Book Night is a celebration of reading where passionate volunteers with a love of reading hand out books to encourage others who don’t read regularly to do so.
