A WEALTHY former Lib Dem peer came to Morecambe and Lunesdale to pledge his support for the Labour candidate in a bid to oust the Tories.

Lord Matthew Oakeshott, who resigned from the Lib Dems after unsuccessfully trying to topple Nick Clegg, visted Labour's Amina Lone on her campaign trail.

Lone is one of 30 Labour candidates to receive a share of a £300,000 Lord Oakeshott donation.

The pair went canvassing for votes around the constituency during his visit on Thursday, April 23.

Speaking exclusively to the Gazette, Lord Oakeshott said: "Amina has her nose in front.

"I'm helping key Labour people here because this election is so close.

"I'm hoping in other places that people will support the Lib Dems but the only way to beat the Conservatives here is to vote for Amina Lone.

"I met her a while ago and she's a real star who could go a long way in politics."
