POPULAR music event Moonfest will get a distinctly funky twist this year as DJ Craig Charles brings his legendary Funk & Soul Club to Kendal Rugby Club.

Now in its ninth year, the charity festival will kick off on Friday June 19 with an evening event for 700 people.

The Craig Charles Funk and Soul Show plays mostly well-known songs by the iconic artists of black American music, from the 1950s to 1980s era, as well as some Northern Soul, alongside modern remixes and unusual cover versions.

These are mixed in with a substantial number of new songs by established bands, emerging British artists and occasionally by unsigned bands.

In addition to the funk and soul mainstay, the show extends into the rhythm and blues, jazz, blues, gospel and hip hop genres.

The second day of Moonfest music will see The Killerz – the UK’s No.1 tribute act to the Killers – headlining the main stage on Saturday (June 20).

Radio 1 favourites Peasant’s King will also be making the journey to perform on the main stage.

Among the many local favourites on the bill will be Amy-Jo Clough, Ben Dyson, Colt 45, The Fiction, Ulpha 590, David Kay, Kev Kendal, Sean Moore and The Orchid Hunters.

This year’s event boasts five stages of live entertainment, including a brand new Folk Stage which will see performances from the likes of Bill Lloyd, Daniel Ray, The Cumbria Gaita Band and The Weirdstring Band.

A dance tent will provide late-night revelry, while a Family Zone will keep the kids entertained.

Last year’s proceeds were donated to the Wayne Broadley Trust Fund and The Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Tickets are available to buy online via www.moonfestkendal.co.uk, or in person from Lound Road garage, Sandylands Spar, Heron Hill Spar and The Castle Inn.
