CUMBRIA’S favourite painting - A Miller’s Homestead by William James Blacklock – is going under the hammer for an expected £150,000.
The view of Eskdale and Scafell Pike in the Lake District, came top of a survey to find Cumbria’s favourite painting, trumping works by the likes of JMW Turner and George Romney. It has previously hung in the Tate Gallery.
The iconic work of the pre-Raphaelite period will be auctioned at Christie’s in London on June 16 with an estimate of £100,000 to £150,000.

The piece, created in 1854, is recognised as a “creative wonder between Romanticism and Impressionism”.
Born in London as the son of a bookseller, Blacklock moved with his family to Cumberland at an early age and abandoned plans for a career in publishing to become an artist.
