A SOUTH Lakeland charity is set to stage three exciting new routes across the sands of Morecambe Bay as part of their 10th anniversary celebrations.

CancerCare's Cross Bay Challenge festivities will see more than 600 people run, walk or cycle across the sands on June 28 to raise vital funds in aid of local families affected by the disease.

CancerCare fundraiser and Cross Bay event organiser Jane Staniford said: “As it’s our 10th anniversary year we wanted to offer participants something a bit different.

"As well as our new Fat Bike Cycle event, we’re offering new routes for our Half Marathon and Walk challenges.”

Walkers embarking on the family friendly seven mile circular route can venture further out onto the sands from Flookburgh towards Cowpren Point, Ulverston and out past Chapel Island.

Those taking on the half marathon will head towards Humphrey Head and across the Kent Channel, going further onto the Bay towards Ulverston and back to Flookburgh.

This year’s challenges will start and finish at the Flookburgh foreshore with a beer tent, hog roast and refreshments at the finish.

Everyone who takes part will receive a CancerCare Cross Bay Challenge medal.

The event has raised more than a quarter of a million pounds to date for Kendal and Lancaster-based CancerCare which offers free support services
