THOUSANDS descended on Dalton-in-Furness at the weekend as the town hosted its annual carnival.

It was floats aplenty for the parade from Tudor Square to Dowdales School field with participants clad in alien and outer space themed dress.

And despite the dreaded forecast for rain, the sun shone on the procession while dancers took to the stage to battle it out in competitions.

Chairman Neil McDougall said: "I'm more than pleased with how it went. We're an affordable family event and everyone enjoyed themselves - it was just a great day."

It is hoped the event on Saturday (June 13) raised more than £2,000 which will go back into Dalton organisations such as youth groups, scouts and football clubs.

This year's Carnival Queen was Sarah Walker, 14, of Dowdales School, who was assisted by two ladies in waiting, two princesses and two pages.
