THE family of murder victim Gordon James Smith have paid tribute to a "wonderful son, brother, uncle, and nephew".

Police were called to Brookside, Lake Road, early Wednesday morning and found the 44-year-old, of Church Street, in the street. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a statement, Mr Smith's family said: "In loving memory of our wonderful son, brother, uncle, and nephew, taken from his family and friends so cruelly and unfairly on Wednesday July 1 2015.

"He will be sorely missed by all who knew and worked with him.”

Mr Smith worked at Windermere Golf Club for eight years.

Cliff Heath, chairman of Windermere Golf Club, said: "Gordon was a conscienscious and loyal employee.  We parted amicably when he moved to the Grey Walls Hotel earlier this year.

"Gordon was very helpful and courteous with both members and visitors alike.  He was a keen Tynesider and an avid supporter of Newcastle United.

"His 'mam' used to come over and visit us frequently and our thoughts are with her and her family at this tragic time.

"Gordon was also a full member of the Golf Club and played enthusiastically in many competitions.  The club flag is flying at half-mast today in recognition."

Meanwhile yesterday (July 2) a 15-year-old girl arrested in connection with his death has been released on bail until July 10.

And magistrates granted a warrant of further detention to give the police another 36 hours in which to question the other three suspects arrested.

They are two local men, aged 26 and 31, and a 48-year-old woman, who was visiting the Lakes.

Peter Muir, bar manager at Windermere Golf Club, said: "Gordon was a very good friend. He was very helpful to everyone and if he could do you a good turn then he would. He will be sadly missed by all his friends."

Tributes on his Facebook page today read: "RIP Gordon. You had a heart of gold. Thank you for all you support the past few years. Still can't believe it. Thoughts are with your family xxx"

Another said: "RIP Gord. Wish I had had more time to get to know you better. You were a lovely interesting person that chatted away and you were great for my mum. Hope the Angels are looking after you xxxx"

The area around the scene remains the subject of on-going police enquiries, but the road has now been re-opened.

Howard Knight who owns Millbeck B&B opposite the property said: “People thought they heard shouting at about three o’clock this morning.

“It’s a terrible thing when someone loses their life. There’s a family there that lost someone and that’s sad.

“You never expect it to happen around you. It’s shocking.”
