THE issue of ‘boy racers’ angering residents with noisy cars is on the increase in Kendal, according to a local police officer.

Concerns were raised about loud motors disturbing the town’s peace at a meeting of Kendal Town Council.

Cllr Shirley Evans asked Inspector Paul Latham, of the Kendal Neighbourhood Policing Team, if the police had the power to stop such vehicles.

Inspector Latham said boy racers was a growing problem in the town, with the area around Morrisons being a particular hotspot for the youngsters – but said officers were working to tackle the issue.

Councillors were told police do stop drivers with overly noisy cars and normally issue a charge requiring the owner of the vehicle to take the car to a garage for the legality of the exhaust to be tested.

Unfortunately, he said, many just border the limit and are passed as legal.
