Traditional skills on show at Lakeland Country Fair at Torver

The terrier, lurcher and whippet classes were well supported – with the champion terrier “Daz” owned by S Robertson from Tebay. The dog went on to win the overall championship for working dogs.

Champion lurcher was "Chester", owned by G Todhunter, and champion whippet was "Cilla", owned by Gillian Langcake.

In the foxhound classes the championship went to "Ullswater Freckle", walked by young Mark Wilkinson, of Ulverston, and the champion ferret was "Alvin", owned by Joanne Walsh.

There were plenty of light-hearted competitions as well, with a family dog show, children's sports, a horn-blowing competition and a tug-of-war between Broughton and Lowick Young Farmers. The trophy was retained by the Lowick team who very generously donated the £50 prize to a cancer charity.

For the fitter visitors there was the traditional Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling, with the all weights trophy being held by Thomas Brocklebank.

The senior fell race, which took the runners to the summit of Coniston Old Man and back, was won by Ross Campbell of Highland Hill Runners who finished in a time of 56 minutes 41 seconds, almost two minutes ahead of John Helme, of Ambleside, in second place. There was also a full programme of junior fell races which were well supported.

The fair tries hard to provide a showcase for traditional Cumbrian skills and activities and many of these were on show. Nicola Evans, of Oxenholme, brought Fell Ponies to the show. There was a display of fell foxhounds and beagles, and skills such as sheep clipping, spinning, fly tying, stick-making and weaving were being carried out.

Visitors could also try their hand at archery or watch demonstrations of Cumbrian cookery by local celebrity Gary McClure.

Organiser Alison Bolt said: "All in all, it was a very successful show."
